See poster on foyer bulletin board. TreasuresOne by one God took them from me All the things I valued most Till I was empty handed Every glittering toy was lost. And I walked earth’s highways Grieving in my rags and poverty until I heard His voice inviting, “Lift those empty hands to me.”
And I turned my hands toward heaven And He filled them with a store Of His own transcendent riches Till they could contain no more. And at last I comprehended With my stupid mind, and dull, That God could not pour His riches Into hands already full. THANK YOU Our thank you this week goes to Jim Dupy for organizing and leading the singing for Wanda Robert’s funeral

Fitness Program Physical fitness is big business in today’s society and a constant concern for many individuals. Infomercials touting the latest exercise equipment, or program, are on television daily. Those who can afford it have the latest and best equipment – some even have personal trainers and personal chefs. Some of our congregation are into physical fitness in a big way; walking, running, kick boxing, exercise regimes, water aerobics, diets – the list goes on. I’ll be the first to admit that I need to get with the program – I’m trying. Physical fitness is important for looks, health and self-esteem; and, nothing in this article is meant to diminish the importance of being physically fit and healthy.
From what we know about Jesus we can conclude that he was physically fit. A carpenter in His day often felled the timber, made the lumber before turning to the project at hand. It may also have included work in the rock quarry, and stone masonry. Jesus walked everywhere He went. He was able to fast for forty days and nights – Jesus was fit!
More important than physical fitness, Jesus exercised daily, from the time he was a boy of twelve, to keep himself spiritually whole and healthy. By the mystery of God, Jesus was fully human and fully divine. “So even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered (Heb 5:8). It makes sense that He would have employed spiritual exercises to cultivate His soul – just as we must.
Jesus spent time with the Scriptures. He spent time in meditation and self-examination. He spent time in prayer. He was in control of Himself.
His example sounds like a good spiritual fitness program for each of us; study the Bible every day, (Joshua 1:8) examine yourself, (2 Cor. 13:5) meditate, (Psa. 119:48) pray frequently, (1 Thes. 5:17) exercise self-control, (1 Peter 1:13). If you truly want to be fit, do as Paul told Timothy, “Spend your time and energy in training yourself for spiritual fitness. Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next” (1 Tim. 4:7b,8). James Cole
