BE WISE WITH YOUR WORDS
I once preached a series of lessons on the book of Proverbs and the underlying theme was wisdom from God’s perspective. One thing I discovered in my study was that Proverbs has a lot to say about controlling our tongue. It seemed that almost in every chapter Solomon was saying something about how a wise person controls his or her tongue. “Death and life are the power of the tongue. Those who love to talk will suffer the consequences.” Proverbs 18:21. The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” Proverbs 13:3.
Solomon had seen a lot in his life, and was passing on the wisdom he had gathered the hard way to his son and to us as well. Apparently, he had witnessed a lot of damage done to others by the tongue. He had probably done some of the damage himself and was trying to spare others the consequences of having a loose tongue. A person who is truly wise, which means seeing and responding to life from God’s perspective, will guard his tongue carefully. The New Testament writers taught the same thing. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29.
More specifically, Solomon had seen lots of damage done by gossip, and so he was passing on words of wisdom inspired by God. “A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue.” Proverbs 11:12. “Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down. . . The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s innermost parts” Proverbs 26:20,22. Gossip is passing on information about others that can hurt them and usually without knowing the true facts.
All of us have been guilty of gossip at one time in out lives. But lets decide now that we won’t keep the fire going. Lets commit ourselves to following God’s wisdom. Lets get the facts before we speak, and them when we do speak, lets speak with others, not about them!
