Synergism

How much more can we do when we work together with God?

Nevada had a state Fair in 1886.  Long before tractor pulls, they had mule pulls.  The winning team of two pulled 14,000 pounds dead weight.  The second place team pulled 13,000 pounds.  Someone wondered how much the four mules would pull altogether.  About 27,000 pounds was the common answer, adding up the amount the two teams had pulled separately.  They hitched up both teams together and onlookers were staggered to see that, put together, the four mules went right on past 27,000 pounds to move 35,0000, over 17 tons!

Such is the power of synergism.  Webster defines synergism as cooperative action of separate entities such that the total effect is greater than the sum of the two effects taken independently.  That is, shared action accomplishes more than one going it alone.  And the effect does not just add up, it multiplies.  With a leverage bar you can move a stone much larger than you could ever move without it.

As Christians, we accomplish more as we pull together.  From outreach efforts to caring for the afflicted to building buildings, we do much more together than one of us could produce.  If each one would teach or invite or visit one, the possibilities for growth would be staggering.

On top of what man can do, God promises spiritual synergism.  He runs with the efforts of faithful persons beyond what their own efforts can accomplish.  "Give and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, they will put into you lap." (Luke 6:38)  Through our one contact the Lord can open doors to many persons.  In out one goal or plan God can bless it time and again and for years to come.  The apostle Paul counted on it, "Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us..."  (Eph 3:20)

Brethren, sometimes our biggest problem is to place trust in a good effort only so far as we can measure it.  While we can never set back and wait for God to make things happen for us, it is hard for us to contemplate Him doing more for us than we can plan. But he is the Lord of More.

The reputation of mules is stubbornness.  The reality of mules is that they surprise us with what they can do because they don't fear doing it.  Synergism takes over.
