Getting Bigger by Thinking Smaller, Part 3
In Part 1 we looked at the beginnings of the church when it met in homes. That was the natural setting for the Family that the church is to be - personal, relational, caring, sharing, and serving. In Part 2 we told of an opponent of the beginnings of Christianity complaining about how successful the home meetings were and we listed a number of house churches as seen in the New Testament. Fundamental to God's plan of salvation is the household. The family is the basic building block of human existence and of any larger group like an ethnic group or a society. Even single persons are normally connected to a family or to a group they receive as family. Some of the saddest conditions of man are seen in those who have no one. The family, the home is the first and the foundational association created by God for the prime social being He created: man. The home, first seen in Adam and Eve, came long before Israel as a nation or God's people as the church. The latter two associations are rooted in what family is to be - they do not eliminate it! The "house(hold) of Israel / of Judah / of God" is common reference many times over in the Old Testament. The church is God's household (Gal 6:10; Eph 2:19; Heb 3:6). Scripture is saturated with family and household language used to describe God's people: God as Father, brothers and sisters, Jesus as Brother (Heb 2:10-12), elders as household stewards (Titus 1:7), etc. Brethren, we must get past any understanding that views Bible descriptions as mere metaphor for dozens, 100s,1000s of people that make up a church. We must grow beyond church family meaning that we personally have some friends down at the church. Foyer acquaintance and basket supper congeniality does not cut it! Is that all you know of or care about your own fleshly kindred? The original creation building block - the home - is still crucial to development, growth, virtue, legacy, and spirituality. It is as important as the created air and water is to physical life. God simply made us that way. And He planned the church that way. The better we function as family instead of mere formality, the more we will experience God's plan for us. The more we know the brethren as family members, the teamwork it takes to make a good home, the reception of new babes and brethren into a household - the more we will be the church as God gave it. Big buildings, backs-of-heads assemblies, and fast paced living have left us starved for our own families; let alone the church as family. Gathering as smaller groups to slow down and know people, to share scriptures for living, feeling safe with others who care, and to desire new babes in Christ will revolutionize our walk with the Lord!
