Attendance and Us, Part 3   -   -   Visitation

Well, I went to visit against my will, I guess

I was hot and tired and troubled, and I wasn’t at my best.

But they told me I was needed so I knew I couldn’t rest.

With my conscience making comments about how I’d failed the test.  First, I went to see a shut-in; she’s been one quite some time.

Oh, how she missed the brethren, but she tried not to pine.

Next, a brother who’d been absent several Sundays in a row,

He thought nobody missed him and he said next time he’d go.

Last, I called upon a couple that just moved into town.

I invited them to visit and they said they’d come around!

Back home again I pondered why I was feeling fine---

Recalling those gladdened faces -  the pleasure was all mine!

Visitation.  The Dreaded Word.  Sounds heavy, hard, and hoary (look it up!).  Sounds complicated, time-consuming, and . . well, . . hard.

We need to move “visitation” from the realm of repeatedly failed program to prime factor in growing this church; from something foreboding in us as we think of ourSELVES to something welcoming to others.  We need to move visiting from the realm of a gift-that-some-few-can-do-but-I-can’t to the nuts and bolts of what being a Christian means.  Matthew 25:31-46 (look it up!) is a picture of judgment and denying-self servanthood.  It still shakes some Christians that the former depends on the latter, and is not left merely to being right while others are wrong.

Why is it so hard to give the same attention to others that we so enjoy ourselves?  Why do we fail to befriend (beyond the church lobby) those who need our concern and the gospel?  When most people who love their church family say they do so because of friends and the loving people in it, what does that imply newcomers and visitors need?

VISITATION.  I’ve long thought maybe we need to use a different term.  How about . . encouragement . . friendship . . care . . hospitality . . looking with compassion . . leaving the ninety and nine . . personal growth . . sharing the gospel . .   Well, what terms can you think of?
