More Than You Think You Will Need When I was taking instructions for flying, the instructor’s rule of thumb for the power setting for landing was “Use more than you think you will need, and then you will have enough.” I did not doubt that he had seen experienced pilots tragically come down short of the runway. If one overshot the runway, he might be able to go around for another try. Short on the runway, nothing could be done. It struck me that the instructor’s rule is a pretty good one to follow in serving the Lord. I do not know any place that specifically states clearly what the minimum in service is. I have met a few people who acted as though baptism was it. A few others seemed to feel that an hour on Sunday morning took care of the week. Now and then one hears someone say of his activity, “That is all that is required.” In finances some seem to say, “A tenth is the minimum;” but can one really claim that when he takes into consideration all that was demanded under the law of an Israelite? Jesus’ picture of the judgment spoke of those who said, “Lord Lord” but were refused. They complained, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, cast out demons in your name, and do many works in your name?’ (Matthew 7:22-23). Evidently they had come short of the runway, so to speak. At the conclusion of Jesus’ parable of the Plowing Servant in which the servant had to do household chores after plowing all day, the summary is, “So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you say, “We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty” (Luke 17:10). My admonition to all of us would be, Do more than you think you will need, and then by the grace of God, you will have enough!” We seek that there be richly provided for us an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
