Are You Patience?
Road rage, excessive credit card debt, higher divorce rate, job-hopping – all of these are terms or phenomena that have become more prevalent in recent years. What do these terms have in common? What characteristic of ours is it that is allowing such items to become more prominent? There’s not one simple answer to that, but a common thread that spears strongly in these and other similar matter is - - -patience, or lack thereof.
We would all do well to keep in mind Proverbs 14:29. “A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly.” Impatience is what causes us to act without thinking, to do those things that cause us later to wish we could rewind our lives and replay that scene again. Galatians 5:22 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” If we are trying to display those qualities in our lives, what is it we can do to help ourselves to become more patient individuals.
First, we have to understand and believe that we can improve and that it is within our control. Granted, some people are more emotional than others, but it is still a choice we can make, a deliberate decision that is up to us. It involves restraint and discipline – not always easy, but within our control. Second, it is helpful to model ourselves after someone else. It may be a parent, friend, teacher, elder, or preacher. There is someone out there we can model. The Bible also gives many good examples: Job, Noah, Moses, Abraham, just to name a few from the Old Testament. In Pet 3:9, Peter talks about the patience of Jesus, “He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” Third, we should recognize that it is an instruction we have received and an obligation we have, as noted in Colossians 3:12: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people…clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. God has certainly been patient with us – let’s strive to be more patient with others. -Ken Keiser
