Why God Should Not Have Called You
There are many reasons why God should not have called you (Rom 8:28; 1 Cor 1:2). But don’t worry. You’re in good company.
Moses stuttered. David’s armor did not fit. John Mark was sent home by Paul. Timothy had ulcers. Hosea’s wife was a loose woman in the neighborhood. Amos’ only training was in fig tree pruning. Jacob was a deceiver. David had an affair, covered by an arranged murder. Solomon was too rich; Jesus was too poor. Abraham and Sarah were too old; David and Josiah and Mary were too young. John and James were self-righteous bigots. Naomi was a widow. Paul and Moses had killed people. Jonah ran from God. Miriam was a gossip.
When we think God would not want to work with us or when we don’t work because we’re sure we are too insignificant, we need to remind ourselves of the people God has always worked with. Except for Jesus, the Lord has never had anyone to work with but sinners. He has never had anyone to work with who was the best at everything or had the most of everything. No one has ever been so valuable that God Almighty had to use him. No one has ever been so worthless that God could not make something of him.
We need the humbling perspective that God has anything to do with us and yet desires everything to do with us. “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Thy name in all the earth . . .what is man that Thou dost take thought of him? . . Thou dost make him to rule over the works of Thy hands” (Psalm 8). Christ was not ashamed to share our frailties and now call us brethren (Hebrews 2:11-15).
The point here is not that it is to our advantage to sin or to be burdened with a difficult situation. The point is that even though we are far from perfect and far from “having it all,” that God desires to work with us and through us. He has no one else. Other people are not special creations that have it over you - unless you do not give yourself to God (2 Corinthians 5:17).
So if there are things you cannot do, qualities you do not have, sins in your life, tasks that you fear - join the crowd! You are now qualified to become a Christian or grow as a Christian. - Cliff
