Thinking About Elders

Paul provided the evangelists Timothy (1 Tim 3:1-7) and Titus (1:5-7) with guidelines for appointing the right kind of men as elders.  In context, those qualities are set over against what is false in others.  The church needed overseers to “encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it” (Titus 1:9).  Fact is, the very reason Titus is given to appoint elders is to silence and rebuke rebellious and corrupt ones who were ruining the church (1:5,10-16).  Everything in the qualities Paul listed, except being married and having children, are virtues that all Christians should develop.  Proven and trusted men were needed.

Many persons who have studied church growth and leadership have catalogued attributes of effective leaders.  To work together with one another as well as with and for a congregation, several very practical attributes are needed.  The list below is NOT meant to replace or be superior to scripture in any way.  It’s simply like this:  the Bible does not say that an elder candidate should not have warrants out for his arrest, but are we ready to follow such a man?  It does not say an elder must not be given to gluttony or that he should contribute generously to his congregation, but will the church be best served by men who practice otherwise?  Consider these practical attributes:

1) Does not seek popularity.  An inferior motive.  May be a

symptom of compromise.  Gal 1:10, 1 Thess 2:4.

2) Possesses integrity, not flattery.  Does not masquerade or run

politics.  1 Thess 2:5

3) Possesses meekness.  Gentleness and control reflected through

personal strength.  1 Thess 2:7.

4) Is complimentary.  Warm, appreciative.  Acts 26:2-3

5) Is humble.  In the grace of the Almighty and does not carry an

inflated sense of self.  Eph 3:7-8, James 4:10.

6) Aware of his humanity.  Knows his own frailties, thus merciful

to imperfections in others.  1 Cor 2:3, Acts 18:9-10.

7) Sacrificial character.  Can give of himself.  Phil 3:7-10, Gal

6:14.

8) Courageous.  A man of convictions, yet brave enough to think

anew.  Acts 20:22-24.

9) Works well with others.  A lover of harmony even when

opinion runs against him. Not a maverick or dissident.

Phil 2:3-4.

10) Impartial. Just. Fair. Not serving his own interests.  Phil 2:3-4

It’s not that an elder has to be an impossible number of things.  It’s that when a man loves the Lord first in life, his own life can fill with many interconnecting virtues.  Study and pray as you consider who can lead, who you will follow.          - Cliff
