The Authority of Elders What does the New Testament actually say on this question, and how much of what people believe about it is deductions they have made? The Greek word exousia (English, “authority”) occurs 103 times. It is also translated “power, right, liberty, jurisdiction, strength.” The Lord, of course, has His own inherent authority by virtue of who He is (Acts 1:7). While on earth Jesus taught as “one having authority” (Matt 7:29). He had “power” to forgive sins (Mark 2:14). He has all power in heaven and earth (Matt 28:15). He is exalted above all authority (Eph 1:21). How much authority can be leftover for any one else in the kingdom?! When sending his disciples out on the ‘limited commission,’ Jesus gave them certain “power and authority . .” (Matt 10:1). Paul spoke of apostolic authority to edify people but not to destroy (2 Cor 10:8, 13:10). In Titus 2:15 the preacher is charged to reprove with all authority (of virtue and the Word). Authoritative tasks are given to servants in a couple of parables (Mark 13:34; Luke 19:17). Civil authorities are described with the same word as having power or jurisdiction (Luke 23:7). Great ones of the earth exercise authority (Matt 20:25; Mark 10:42), sometimes called benefactors (Luke 22:25). Sometimes it is military command and authority in view (Matt 8:9; Luke 7:8). Saul had “authority” to bind persons following the Way (Acts 9:14). The devil has authority to cast into hell and to empower his agents (Luke 12:5; Rev 13:2-7). Those who follow the Lord have a “right” to the tree of life (Rev 22:14). A Christian has “liberty” (personal decision-making authority) to eat meat if he chooses (1 Cor 8:9). And so on. The striking observation is that while exousia is used for God, Jesus, the devil, civil and military rulers, apostles, an evangelist, servants and ordinary Christians, it is never once used in connection with the function of an elder or the attitude Christians are to have toward elders. Words create the patterns in which we think. We must look at the Biblical words for God’s desire for church leaders. “The elder is an example to be followed; a teacher from whom to learn; a shepherd whose voice one heeds; a protector from wolves; a leader to whom one submits in humility; because he is God’s steward; an older man to whom due respect is gladly given . . The elder should conceive of himself, not in terms of authority, but in terms of doing a ‘good work.’” - Condensed from Dr. Jack Lewis, Harding University Leadership Questions Confronting the Church
