Throwing in the Towel

Have you ever been tired of walking the walk?  Do you often think about just “throwing in the towel” when it comes to being a Christian?  I’ll be honest with you, there have been times when I have thought those very same things.  I’m thankful these thoughts have been few and far between, and when they do pop into my head they don’t stay long.

If you are like me, then I’m sure you have had those same thoughts.  They might come at a point when you are on a Spiritual low, when nothing seems to be going right, and God seems so far away.  Maybe it has come from a time of persecution at work, school, or in you family.  If you have ever felt that way you’re not alone, and there are several examples of great men of God who felt the same way.

In the book of Jeremiah we read of a particular instance when Jeremiah thought about “throwing in the towel.”  In chapter 20 he was being persecuted for proclaiming a message God had given him.  He put into stocks, beaten, and ridiculed.  Everywhere he turned people were looking to see if he would slip up.  It’s easy to see why Jeremiah felt the way he did in verse 7 and 8.  Notice what he says though in verse 9, “But if I say, “I will not mention him or speak anymore in his name, “his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones.  I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot

Even though Jeremiah probably felt he was at the bottom of his Ministry, ready to give in, he could not!  His relationship to God was too deep, too deep to even hold it in.  He even realized that it wasn’t his responsibility to get even with the people who hurt him, he put that in God’s hands.

What an awesome example of how our relationship with God should be, especially when we’re ready to “throw in the towel.”
