SUNSETS AND WORSHIP SERVICES

We have heard of  “sunsets” all of our lives.  But there is no such thing.  The earth rotates until the sun is out of view.  I vaguely remember figuring that out in grade school science.  We are turning; the sun is not going round us.  I had to unlearn what everyday talk implied.

We have also heard “worship service” and “going to worship” all of our lives.  Biblically, there is no such thing.  Worship is a chosen life before the Lord, not a Sunday event.  If we unlearn some thinking we can better see what we are about.

One word for worship in the N.T. is eusebeia.  Paul used it in Acts 17:23 like the Greeks used it to describe honoring gods.  But in Christian usage one Greek professor writes,  “It does not consist in . . acts of congregational worship.  It refers rather to a Christian’s manner of life.”  See eusebeia used in such passages as 1 Tim 2:2,10, 4:7-8, 6:3-6; 2 Pet 1:3,6 and is translated as “godliness, good deeds, spiritual fitness.”  That’s worship!

Another N.T. word for worship is threskeia.  It is used in Col 2:18 for the false worship of angels.  But in James 1:27 in Christian application the same word is defined as looking after the downtrodden and a living a consecrated lifestyle.  That’s worship!

Another word for worship is proskuneo, “visible majesty before which the worshipper bows.”  It is in John 4:21-24.  Jesus gives the word a heightened sphere - no longer is worship a thing of place; it is of knowledge, relationship with the Father, spirit, and truth.  The truth is not five or more acts.  The truth is about the other things named here: about Him and our place before Him.  That’s worship!

A word from Jewish temple worship, latreia, reappears for Christians.  It carries a spiritualized force that comprehends total relationship and service to God (Phil 3:3; Heb 9:14, 12:28).  Its highest expression is Rom 12:1, the fullest definition of N.T. worship - the offering of self as sacrifice, a rational service.  That’s worship!

New Covenant worship is not merely associated with acts limited in place and time.  It encompasses the whole of life.  There is not a line drawn between worship proper over here and serving, practical matters over there. “Spirit and truth” is seeking relationship with Him.  It is not a “worship service,” but a life of service.  That’s worship!

Of course, we know when we come together to worship, and we must do so in God-given ways.  But we must constantly worship away from the building to properly come to the building to worship.  We can figure out the truth about “sunsets.”  We must get the truth about worship.                            - Cliff
