Misconceptions About Tithing
Myth 1. 10% of all net worth must be given at once. Old Testament law called for 10% of regular increase, i.e., the produce of the crop, fruit of the trees and growth of herds. 90% was left to abound. Tithing did not ask for holdings – those were given to special needs (Numbers 7).
Myth 2. The Jewish tithe was not just to cover their religion; it paid for their government. Their King was to be God, the earthly king was to be His representative. A king’s resources came through taxation and forced labor (1Kings 4:21ff, 9:15-22. 12:6-11). Long after tithing was instituted, Samuel warned the Israelites wanting a king that having a king would cause those very hardships upon them (1Sam 8:10-22). Tithing went to the Levites, not to government services. The Jews tithed, gave to special causes out of their holdings, and paid taxes.
Myth 3. Tithing is Old Testament law and therefore abolished by the work of Christ. Every O.T. principle about morality and relating to God is part of the N.T. (not the systems, like animal sacrifices, but the principles). Principles and promises are deepened and broadened in the N.T., not lessened or rejected. Tithing was a common ancient practice by the Jewish patriarchs and others long before the law of Moses (Gen 14:17-20, 28:22). It became part of the law, not to start up giving, but to teach trust in the Lord instead of self. With the New Covenant, has God now accomplished less for us? Tithing is not an O.T. system to be dropped in favor of doing less. It was a means God gave the people to express their praise and love for Him and to leave behind materialism (Deut 14:22-23). It grows people who intend to grow in faith. “He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly. He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. . . God is able to make all grace abound to you that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed, as it is written, “He scattered aboard, He gave to the poor, His righteousness abides forever” (2 Cor 9:6-9). Remember, the N.T. never uses the O.T. to diminish or reduce the “Schoolmaster” (Gal 3:24) principles of covenant relationship to God. - Cliffs
