Being Cruel to One Another
An old sin raised its head here again recently. It was for the one thousand and umpteenth time that I have seen it, known of it, or felt it myself during many years of church work. Two diseases are at work: Belittle-ism: Results from a spiritually small heart; Reduced capacity makes demands upon others; Verbal discharges characterized by “Why did YOU not include / do / make . .” “YOU should have done it like this . . “ “Some of us think YOU ought to . .” “Next time YOU should . .” “Why did YOU do that!?” ; Underlying ugly implications include “But don’t ask me to help you” “I have no idea what it takes, but it should be done better” “I’m here to be served, not to serve” “I have no time, it’s up to you” “Since I want it like that, you should . .”; Thoughtlessness occurs at the cellular level; Causes severe pain in others.
Belittleism is a secondary illness preceded by: Me-itis: Undeterred focus on one’s self; Causes the mouth to say anything it wants in the attempt to force one’s way or preference or expectation upon another; Meant to shame or guilt another into action for one’s own benefit; Taking action to see that self is being served and pleased; Such symptoms are followed by a self-righteous release, sometimes with an “I just speak my mind” attitude (swelling appears on the “I” and the “my”). Jesus set no overlords in His church. Everyone is to be a slave to Him and a servant of all. Kind discussions with suggestions are possible, but the needling or circling around to force one’s partialities, “should have’s,” and “you do it’s” is sin. Pushing the persons who get things done with no heart to help them or understanding of what it takes (to serve you!) is inconsiderate at the core. Remedies include: “Do nothing from selfishness . . , but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others” (Phil 2:3-4). “Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to his edification” (Rom 15:2). – Cliff
