The New Year
Rosh Ha-shanah means “head / beginning of the year” in Hebrew. There are actually four new year days on the Jewish calendar! What would we do with four dates on the calendar for a new year’s day?! What do you do with the one we have? Each of the four new year days on the Jewish calendar signifies a new and different start in worshiping and serving the Lord. The rabbis taught that at four times in the year the world was judged (at Passover, Pentecost, Feast of Tabernacles, and the New Year). It was said that people were judged before God at the new year like soldiers passing in review, for it is written, “He who fashions the hearts of them all, He who understands all their works” (Psalm 33:15). And here we are seeing New Year’s Day as a day off work, full of football games or some kind of relaxation. Worldly persons use the night before as an excuse for regrettable revelry. New Year often means a new diet that will fizzle out in a few days or a resolve to break a habit that still lingers come March. It may take until February to quit writing 2002 on checks. OR we can make something wonderful happen. This Northridge family has a potential much beyond its current punch. We can have a year of better equipping, training, personal and congregational growth. There ARE new works and helps in the pipeline. Stand ready to learn and serve. Godly stewardship of all Northridge resources will immeasurably strengthen every aspect of this church. We must be a New Covenant church of ministers instead of just a church with ministers. Too many personal gifts are left as untapped resources. What if 2003 became the year of the Holy Spirit released in our lives and works? We must be a people hungering and thirsting for righteousness. With decision and conviction we can move from having a few “regular” Bible readers to quite a few “daily” Bible readers. When our hearts believe that the lost are lost, when our spirits are empowered by His Spirit, when we love Jesus more than our stuff and schedules, when we recognize that the church is Family, when prayer is known to be power, then we will experience great joy and growth in the kingdom. Maybe we need to schedule four new beginnings each year - to remind us of what it is we are about! How well do you pass in review? - Cliff
