Jim’s Journal
There is a lot of talk this year about how
the retailers will do with holiday sales. Economists are concerned, those who
deal in the stock market are keeping a close eye on the figures, and retailers
know the majority of their year’s sales well take place in the next three weeks.
What kinds of gifts mean the most to you?
Perhaps it is a collectible, something homemade, or with sentimental value. The
greatest gift ever given was Jesus Christ. His sacrificial love is the
benchmark for us to pattern our response to others. This year I hope we will
all concentrate on giving ourselves first.
When we give gifts like compassion,
forgiveness, patience, kindness, encouragement, time and mercy, we make a
difference in the lives of every person we contact. These are the gifts that
cannot be measured in dollars and cents, but which have the most lasting
impact. Jesus died to lead us to a better way of thinking, acting and serving.
In the early days of the New Testament
church, strangers noticed something unique about those who serve the king. They
noticed they were different. The conclusion that was drawn was these people had
been with Jesus. There is a great need today for people to see Jesus, and the
only way that can happen is when we model Him through our lives.
May we all pause this season and
concentrate on ways we can be able to emulate Christ to a world filled with
fear, doubt, sin and loneliness. The light penetrated the darkness and nothing
will be the same again. (See John 1)
