Rampey’s Ramblings
A fisherman I am not. I like to get out in nature and enjoy God’s creation but I have never been a good fisherman. Fishing for catfish takes too much patience and I just can’t catch bass. One summer afternoon my Grandpa, Dewitt Downing, and I decided we would spend time together by going fishing. So we loaded up in the 1969 orange Ford pickup, which he calls pinky. We drove out to lake Hudson just East of Pryor. We found a nice little cove with no one near it. We had all the tackle we needed and good rod and rills. We both fixed our bait and cast out into the cove looking for that first fish. We sat there for maybe fifteen minutes and decided the fish just weren’t biting that day, so we left.
Now if I were to ask any of you who fish about our day and why we didn’t catch anything, I know you would say we didn’t stay long enough. Jesus told Peter, Andrew, James and John that he would make fishers of men. These four men were fishers of fish by trade. They know how to fish. They know that you must use different bait for different fish.
I think sometimes I go out looking to fish for bass when I should be fishing for catfish. People are much the same. Some will bite on any bait we put in front of them, others are more wary and we must go deep and be patient waiting for them to get hooked. The key to fishing for men is to not give up as my Grandpa and I did. We should pray for those who have not been hooked by God.
