************************************************************************** SPIDERMAN AND MORALITY For comic book fans, this has been an exciting week. As movie technology has progressed Hollywood has been able to produce amazing special effects. This has allowed movies to have scenes look impossibly real, that only a short time a ago could only be drawn in a comic book. With this technology, several of Stan Lee’s creations have come to life in the movies. First there was X -Men, and soon the Incredible hulk will be out. However, Stan Lee’s best know story, Spiderman, appeared on video store shelves this week. As a matter of fact, Walmart stayed open late so that they could begin selling to rabid fans at midnight. Spiderman was different that all previous super heroes because Peter Parker was just a normal guy. For the first time the audience could see the things that happened to Peter Parker actually happened to them. Having a super hero that the average Joe could relate to was huge. Well, as any Spiderman fan knows, there is a crucial scene that occurs when he is learning to use his super powers. Peter ends up getting cheated out of money he was owed on a technicality. He gets angry and leaves and the fellow that cheated him gets robbed. Peter then has a chance to stop the bad guy, but instead lets him walk by and says with a sly grin “Not my problem”. Of course the villain proceeds downstairs and hijacks the car Peter’s uncle is driving and shoots his uncle. This is obviously a pivotal scene for our super hero as he realizes it is his fault. He could have saved his uncle by doing the right thing. I always find it amazing when Hollywood, or any other media outlet, tries to grapple with a spiritual concept. Sometimes it is amusing, but most of the time it is just sad. As the world watches a scene like the one described above, and sees the main character getting back at the guy that just wronged him, they get excited, and cheer him on. They are happy that the first guy gets what he deserved. They don’t even see the foreshadowing lurking around the corner and get set up for a huge range of emotions when the uncle is shot. Hollywood knows this and they prey upon it. The fact is, when a Christian sees a scene like this unfold they think, “He’ll stop the bad guy” and when he does not, the first reaction is, “Uh oh, he should have done the right thing.” The fascinating thing is, when we follow the teachings of Christ we reap spiritual benefits, most of the time without even realizing it. But that’s not why we do things that way. We do so because we are commanded to. We do what we are commanded because it is the right thing to do. As you face the world this week, remember to do the right thing. “You have heard that it was said, “Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth’. But I tell you, do not resist and evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also,” Matthew 5:38-39 Paul Hendrickson
