OPPORTUNITY FOR COMPASSIONATE SERVICE
We received a request last week from Chris Stinnett of the
Seminole congregation. Sherry Updegraft was baptized last Sunday. She is an
elderly lady being cared for at Shawnee Care Center. She has had extensive
facial surgery due to cancer and is terminally ill. Chris hopes some of our
ladies (or anyone) can befriend her in these last weeks of her life with visits
of prayer, teaching and reading. See Cliff for details.

Standing Before God’s Throne
Have you ever
wondered what it will be like when we stand before the judgment seat of Christ?
Wondering about the unknown probably makes more people a little nervous than
just about anything else. Recently I had the experience of being summoned for
jury duty and learning how the process works. Basically, a room full of
church-type pews were filled with over 420 people from all walks of life.
Anyone from age 18 to 70 was present. Doctors, laborers, housewives and
students filled the room. Many of us waited, and waited.
As the day
moved along, judges would call for a certain number of potential jurors to be
called from the jury pool for that judge’s courtroom. The drill was the same.
Names were chosen randomly by the computer and called alphabetically. When the
letter of one’s last name was by passed that meant the wait would continue. I
spent all day Monday and Tuesday without my name ever being called.
Then I began
to think (isn’t that what preachers are supposed to do?) I could go all week
without my name being called. And I thought about what it would be like when we
stand before the judgment seat of Christ. The scripture is very clear. At some
point the future, WE WILL ALL appear before God. EVERY knee will bow and
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. The books will be opened and everyone will
answer for his life – either to be welcomed into heaven of doomed to hell.
Our name will
be called!!! Of that we can be sure. We will stand before the judge. Our case
will be heard. There will be no need of a jury for the verdict will have
already been determined. For those who have accepted the Lordship of Jesus
Christ and surrendered their life to Him, the price has already been paid on the
cross. We will hear those wonderful words, “enter in thou good and faithful
servant.”
For those who
have not obeyed the gospel, the verdict has been set as well. The painful
words, “depart from me for I never knew you” will mean eternal damnation. As
hard as it is to wait in a jury room, I am thankful that I can know what it can
be like when we stand before the great judge one day., we won’t have to wonder
if our names will be called, for it is already written in the books.
The question
just remains – is it in the book of life? Are we ready for that day to come?
