“Like A Child Serving His Father”

What does it take to be successful – in athletics, in music, in serving, in life?  What does it require to be a faithful Christian?  Although there are many qualities that must be possessed to be successful in any of these things, there is one word that can answer these questions well.  It takes commitment.  How can we possibly be successful in any area of life without being committed to whatever it is we’re doing?

“I exhort you, therefore, be imitators of me.  For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, and he will remind you of my ways which are in Christ, just as I teach everywhere in every church” (Corinthians 4:16-17).

I think we would all agree that Paul was committed to teaching the gospel of Christ.  Paul tells us here that we should be committed to our examples.  We read that Timothy was committed in Philippians 4:22. “But you know of his proven worth that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father.”  Timothy was committed to his example.  He was committed to being an imitator of Paul, who was himself an imitator of Christ.

What better example do we have of two people being committed to one another as well as being committed to the Lord than that of Paul and Timothy?  It is obvious that Paul was committed to serving the Lord.  It becomes obvious in several of Paul’s’ letters that Timothy was committed to Paul in serving the Lord.  Do you have an example that you commit yourself to in order to follow their example of being like Christ?  What are we committed to?  Let’s all consider this and, using the example of Paul and Timothy, learn to commit ourselves to serving the Lord like “children serving their Father”.                   Clay Bryant – Del City Church of Christ
