Remember in Your Prayers

Carolyn Wells, Ina Cole’s niece, passed away last week. She was the daughter-in-law of Ina’s brother, Al Wells.  Prayers are needed for her husband Don and her 10-year-old daughter.

Mike Finley, Melrose Kotts’ son, has been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Susan Baker requests prayers for Shelby and Jaime.

Brad Peters, son of Dana Shelburne’s friend, Tracey Peters Massengale, was killed in a car wreck last Tuesday.

Mark Hale, minister at the Oakcrest congregation, was recently diagnosed with colon cancer.

Prayer

Writer Annie Dillard discussed the importance of prayer by referring to an event in space.  In 1054 people first noticed the flare in the sky that has become known as the Ring Nebula.  So bright then that it was visible during the day, astronomers tell us that it is a star in the process of explosion.  Its light has dimmed, and now it looks like a dusty smoke ring when viewed through binoculars.  It is still exploding though, and expanding at a rate of 70 million miles a day.

Its movement is all but invisible to us.  Photographs of the Ring Nebula taken today are virtually identical to photos taken 15 or more years ago.  We are so far away from it that its movement is imperceptible.  This is evidence that huge happenings are often invisible to us.

So it is with our prayers.  We pray and pray and nothing seems to happen.  Yet if we could see from a heavenly perspective, we might notice astounding changes.  And we might take renewed encouragement from knowing that God is doing great things because we asked.

Ben Patterson wrote about a time when he was confined to bed for weeks due to severe back pain.  After two weeks of boredom, he asked his wife for a church directory so that he at least could pray for the members.  His motives were not high- he was frustrated and lonely- but the results were wonderful.  As his recovery progressed he grew to cherish his time in prayer.  And he learned that he could continue his prayer program even after returning to work.

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.  Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (Matthew 6:6 NIV)

If we assume that we are too busy to pray, we must realize that we still have 24 hours each day, no matter what.  We must set aside time to pray, considering it an appointment that must be kept.

If we consider that our prayers are ineffective and that nothing changes due to our prayers, we must seek the heavenly perspective and look for what God is doing in the universe.  We must seek His goals and His will and not our own desires and comforts.

Only in eternity will we be able to know or understand what great good has been done by those who persistently prayed.  Prayer reforms us, refreshes us, and renews us.  Prayer takes us into the presence of God in an intimate relationship.
