FERDINAN THE BULL

I always said I grew up like a weed, out in the country north of Seminole.  It was just my parents and I.   Our closest neighbor was a half-mile away and my closest friend lived 2 miles away.

I fought many Indians and German in the trees behind our house.  We lived on 40 acres and my uncle had 160 acres so I had plenty of room to roam.  I even got to “help” my uncle raise his cows.   At one time we had as many as forty head of Herefords.

When I was 16 or 17 I got a pet bull, I called him Ferdinan.  He was an outstanding bull, so gentle and smarter than the average bull.   I taught him many tricks.  On command he would bow his head in prayer, he would sit when asked, he would lie down and completely relax when I asked him to.  He would even wave his tail in a special way just to make people laugh.  Most of the time he stood tall and proud, with head held high.

As talented as Ferdinan was, he was just as demanding.  He wanted everything his way and as a result when he got everything others suffered.  Ferdinan was unique in another way, he was “green” and lived on the dash of my 52 Chevy.  You see Ferdinan was a vacuum operated device that was designed to save gas.

The more vacuum the engine produced the more ridged Ferdinan stood, so with a little practice with the engine RPM and vacuum I could make Ferdinan to his tricks.  The harder the engine was working taking the car down the road the less vacuum Ferdinan got and the less ridged he stood.

Sometime members of the Lords Body are like Ferdinan, they demand that everything go their way or they hinder the work of the congregation by taking power from other programs to insure that their agendas are met.

You see Christians are asked to completely empty themselves so that God’s work can be done, the Kingdom can be spread and God glorified.

Ferdinan the Bull was funny and amusing but for him to do his tricks power had to be diverted from him to the engine and other parts of the car.  We face a challenging new year, financially, emotionally and spiritually so lets all be determined to empty ourselves so God’s kingdom will grow and prosper in Shawnee.
