Small Group Serendipity (Pleasant Surprises)

Two weeks ago we listed here 3 serendipities that churches with well-planned small groups have experienced:

      A) Deeper Fellowship than ever thought possible (with more people),

      B) the Power of Christian Hospitality - people want to have people come over,

      C) Leadership Development as leaders grow and new leaders emerge.

            Consider these positive aspects also:

      D) Flexibility - A uniform program of teaching for meeting on Sundays will

be used for all groups, but logistically, there is almost unlimited flexibility.

For each group, there will be choice of meeting times and places.  Group

activities, involvements, and ministries can be chosen and focused by the

interests, schedules, and abilities of each group.

      E) Integration of New Members - Whether a new Christian or someone

moving to the Northridge Family, groups are the ideal way to rapidly and

efficiently introduce someone to a circle of friends and involvements.  New

members are more quickly aware of service opportunities at the group level.

      F) Outreach Ownership - More Christians take on more responsibility to

invite new people to the church through their group.  They experience the

joy of watching someone transform.  Oftentimes, persons invited "to

church" will more likely go with an acquaintance to a small group than to

           enter a full church assembly.

      G) More Connectedness to Leaders - With each elder responsible to just two

groups, more real shepherding possibilities can occur.  Group co-leaders

(Facilitators) will have a "go-to" leader to approach with the personal

concerns of the group.  The whole church is "boiled down" to more

           manageable connections and accountability.

Think of some of the reasons why small groups deliver positive results.  It takes on real aspects of the first century church. That is, instead of our religion being so much building centered, it necessarily becomes more people centered, one another centered.  Instead of being so Sunday centered, religion becomes more daily centered, connecting to the lives of several special people.  Instead of being so preacher-sermon-lesson centered (and critiquing the same), groups allow more applied-in-real-life thinking, member centered.  Instead of elders shepherding by lists and being "over areas," more informative and face to face knowledge of people can occur.  Instead of staff hired to do church work, staff gets to multiply itself in training, equipping, and involving - more needs and works are heard by more people on a personal appeal level.  "Getting bigger by thinking smaller" becomes a real possibility.
